County Cup Semi Final

Cleator Moor Celtic 2 vs Northbank 3

This was our second semi-final in 2 weeks, and this game was going to be difficult as last weeks if not more so, as we had been drawn away to the club that won this competition for the last 2 years.

The game was played on McGrath Park, Cleator Moor Celtics Senior pitch.

Both teams started well, but it was Cleator who opened the scoring after a great run by their lively left winger, who rounded our defence and put a perfect cross into their striker who calmly put it that point the boys could have let their heads go down, but they didn't....James played especially well in the first half, matching his opponents for tenacity and determination...about 10 mins after their goal, we were awarded a free kick around the half way line, Max crossed it in, Adam got a flick on, then just as it looked like the goalie just had to catch it, Jack ran in, challenged the goalie and headed the ball over the goalie, ran round him and put the ball into the empty on...

Into the second half we could not have got off to a better start, Rhys was passed the ball by Max (not for the first time), then realising he had no one to pass too, decided to have a shot from outside the box, it was really well struck and the ball found its target going over their goalie, which was some feat as he was a tall goalie....great goal...

After the goal, Cleator pushed hard for the equaliser, which we managed to deal for a good 15 mins, but finally they got their second goal with an unstoppable shot with about tens mins to go...

It looked like it would stay that way, and the match was heading for extra time and the dreaded penalties again...But with 1min to go we broke down the left with good play between Dave and Luke and Max, which ended with Max seeing that Jack and Alex were in the open on the right he passed it to Jack who in turn passed it onto Alex, just when it looked like Alex was going to shoot, one of their defenders came in fast and took the ball of Alex, but Alex showed great strength to tackle back, getting the ball back in his possesion, but this time he got his shot away before anyone else could tackle him, and the ball went past the despairing goalie into the corner of the net...

Then followed the longest 1min we have ever known, with Cleator trying to equalise, but with no avail, finally the ref. blew his whistle and we were through to another final....Great game...great result...

Finally we (Northbank U12's) would like to thank Cleator Moor Celtic for their hospitality before, during and after the game...(free hot dogs which went down well with the boys)...Also the ref., who had a good game...

League Cup Semi Final

Northbank 1 vs Carlisle City Reds 1

Northbank won 3-2 on penalties.

This was the first of 2 semi-finals over the next 2 weekends for the team, and the first time we have played this City team this season, so it was difficult to say which way it would go.

Initially both teams shared the chances, but it was City who took an early lead, coming from a strong run by their striker and a great finish to follow.

City held the lead until half-time, we made 2 subs directly at half time, putting Luke and Anthony into the game, bearly 10 mins in Alex went past 2 of the city's defenders with a strong run, he then passed into the middle, where Luke got on the end of his cross with a great flick into the net 1-1, unfortunatly Luke hurt himself in the process and had to come off, but he had got us back into the game.

Despite chances for both teams there was no more score after normal time and after 20mins extra time, so the game moved onto penalties.

Northbank managed to come out on top 3-2, with our goalie saving 2 of the City pens.

Great win for the boys, now its off to Brunton Park for the final in May.

Well done boys...

County Cup Qtr Final

Northbank 7 vs Abbeytown 1

Northbank played only their 4th game of 2011 this morning in the County Cup Qtr Final...

The boys were asked for a quick start to the game and thats exactly what they produced, with 2 goals in the first 5 mins...which helped to settle any nerves out there...

The boys produced some great football against a tough team, taking it to 3-1 at half time..

The second half again started brightly with a quick fourth goal, the defence kept it solid throughout the game, with Adam given the Man of the match award..although a case could have been made for all of the boys.

The boys added 3 more to make it a good result at 7-1...

The team now moves into a well deserved place in the semi-finals.

Good start to the season

So far the boys have played 12 games, 4 in the cups and 8 in the league, winning 10 of them, drawing 1 with 1 loss, scoring 54 goals along the way.

The 4 new boys are fitting in really well, with returning "new" boy Luke scoring 2 goals in his first 30mins and Zack / James proving to be great additions to our defensive play, whilst Simon also had a positive impact in his first games for us.

The boys have now made it to the semi-finals of the league cup which will be played later in the season, joining 3 good teams, Upperby, City and Gilford with the draw being made on the day of the game.

They have also made it through to the last eight of the County Cup...

League Game vs Stanwix

This was the third tough game for our team in the last week.

The match did not start of well for us, with a mix up in defence letting in a Stanwix player who put the ball away well. However what came next was probably the best team goal we have scored all season, it started with Max picking up the ball in his own area, he then passed it forward to Rhys, who then passed it over the half way line to David, who took it up the wing to the corner, then he played in a brilliant cross right to the back post, with Jack just arriving to head in the goal.

This then spurred Northbank on and we were able to open up the lead to 2-1, then unfortunatly a penalty was awarded against us for handball, which if Stanwix levelled the game would be all square again, fortunatly for us our goalie Scott made a great save high and to the right of him, which he palmed over the goals.

Then almost straight after this, some great play by Rhys to round the goalie, was put away by David from close range.

We then scored one more after some good interplay between Jack and Alex, allowing Alex to take his goal well.

The second half saw Stanwix pull another goal back after some good play on the edge of our box.

Then again another good goal, the ball was played through to Rhys by Jack, and it looked as though the ball was played too hard at him, but Rhys controlled the ball deftly with his first touch, allowing him to spin round and run for goal, where he coolly scored, great goal.

The game was then rounded off with Jack's second goal, calmly sidefooted into the net from the edge of the 18 yard area.

So a final score of 6-2, a good result against a good team.

League Game vs Carlisle City A

On Tuesday Northbank played a re-arranged game against City A, who played very well in the first meeting this year, so we were ecpecting another hard game.

In this game the boys had something to prove to themselves after not playing to their ability recently, and in the first half they played brilliantly from front to back, this enabled Rhys to score a first half Hat trick after some great support play by David / Max and Jack especially, Jack also added a well taken goal after being put through by Alex Bell, so the score at half time was 4-0.

The second half was a closer game with City pressing well, but with Adam scoring 2 goals to cap a good game off for himself, City could only pull 1 back to make the final result 6-1 to Northbank.

League Cup Qtr Final vs Gillford Park

Today the boys played their 2nd game in this years league cup, after having a tough match against Abbeytown, we expected much of the same against a decent team.

The game started well for Northbank with some good early football, one good move down the wing by David, ended in a great cross into the box, which left Jack with a pass into the net to make it 1-0.

Then followed a period of the game that was balanced between the 2 teams, with no one making any clear cut chances, then with 5mins to go of the 1st half, Jack B connected well with the ball to clear danger, but the ball hit Adam and rebounded to a Gillford player, who put the ball into the bottom corner..At this point the next goal was very important, and almost from the kick off Northbank pressed the Gillford goal, with Jack collecting the ball nearly on the corner line and somehow he managed to squeeze the ball past the Gillford goalie into the net, so 2-1 to Northbank at half-time.

For the second half the boys were asked to make an extra effort early on to get the third and settle the nerves a little, which is exactly what they did a good move ending with Max hitting an unstoppable shot into the net, Northbank then played some good football with Adam (MoM) at the back and Scott in goals stopping all that came at them.

Then after another good move, Rhys picked up the ball on the edge of the box, and with players round him he heard a shout from Max, and put a great pass through which Max again made no mistake with making it 4-1.

A great game played in the right spirit, witch ended with Northbank taking a deserved place in the Cup finals at Brunton park..

And also, today saw Northbank score their 100th goal this season after only 13 games..a great return for some hardwork by the whole team.

League game vs Northbank 9-1win

Definitly a game of 2halves for our last league game of the season.

We scored early on, with a good move by Jack finished of by Max, but it was a close game and Northbank got back to 1-1 with a well taken goal. We were not able to add to the score in the first half.

After a good team talk at half time and the players asked to get a quick goal, Max again finished of close in after a pass from Jack. Then the other Northbank began to tire and our boys took advantage, with Ben scoring 4 well taken goals, Max getting his hat trick and Jack and David getting 1 each.

The score  finished up 9-1 and  enabled  our team to finish the season unbeaten having scored 113 goals along the way.

A great season, which will be hard to better next year.

League game vs Warwick Wanderers 5-3 win

A match that promised a real test for the team, with ourselves being unbeaten this season and Warwick only having lost 1 themselves.

The match started well for Warwick taking the lead, after good play by their striker, eventually putting the ball through Scotts legs.

This served to galvanise our boys into action, with Jack scoring direct from a corner to level the score, then David picked the ball up from the half way line, and steadied himself before striking the ball into the top corner, giving the goalie no chance. So going into the break we had a slender 2-1 lead.

Going into the second half, we started to play some good passing football, one such move from David ended up with Jack tapping in for his second goal. However the Warwick boys never gave up and pulled it back to 3-2with a deflected goal, then it was end to end. David increased our lead to 4-2 with a good strike at the back post. Warwick again pulled one back via an own goal from us, but Max scored out 5th and final goal to settle the match late on.

A good win for the boys, extending their unbeaten run into the last game of the season vs the other Northbank side.

League Game vs Stanwix - 3 - 1 win

Another really good performance by the boys against a top team, with a good defence / goalie, having let in less than 10 goals all season.

Northbank started of well, scoring 3 goals in a 5min spell, all scored by good passing and understanding between the players, Max scoring 1 and Jack scoring the other 2.

Second half was a close affair, with Stanwix pulling a goal back. Both teams had more chances to score, but were unable to add to the scoreline.

Jack Bell deserved the MOM award for our team, after some sterling defence work.

Another good game from the boys, starting with  a goal  from  Max within the  1st  20 seconds, then  came  a  series  of  great moves by our team, enabling us to go 5-0 up, culminating in a well taken goal by Jack after a defence splitting pass from Max. City got a goal back before half time.

After the restart it was  a much closer game, with ourselves scoring twice more and city scoring another themselves,to bring the final score to 7-2, David scored a hat trick of well taken goals to take a well deserved MoM trophy.

League Game vs Warwick Wanderer 6-1 win

Another good performance by the boys, with 3 goals for their efforts in the first half, once each for Jack(MoM), Max and David, with Davids being a really good shot from along way out.

In the second half,we scored another 3 goals, but the quality of our play was much better, with Jack and Max soring again, Max's goal was a real screamer from a long out, giving the goalie no chance, the scoring was rounded of by Ben Cortes scoring at the back post.

The boys will play and have played better, but they got the job done, and enjoyed it at the same time.

League game vs Carlisle City - 2-0 Win

A match that really showed how much our team has improved, we started the match with only 7 players, with Ben taking over in goals, so we knew it would be difficult with having no subs.

In the first half we had quite a few chances with no end product, some long range shots which their keeper saved well. City had a good chance after a goal mouth scramble, but Ben saved well down to his left. So the half ended 0-0.

The second half was much better for us, rather than running out of steam, our team actually picked it up a bit, we scored the 1st goal from a good move down the left, finishing with Jack scoring an opportunist goal.  Then 5 minutes later Jack made it 2-0 with a volley after some good play by MoM Adam Robinson.

All in all a good win for us against 1 of the top teams in our league.

League Game vs Upperby 3-3 draw

Our first game since November, Upperby had a good start, but with no end product, we then started to come more into the game and scored the first goal via Max Brown, and it stayed that way going into the break. Mainly due to some good defending by Jack Bell and Keegan.

After the break we started well, with a second goal coming after a well taken corner by Jack Hannah, with David Carruthers clinically finishing the move.

Then with some adjustments to the Upperby team, they got back into the game after a goal mouth scramble, bringing it to 2-1, then after another scramble they pulled it back to 2-2 after an OG on our side.

The game then took a turn for the worse for us, with Upperby scoring a rather dubious goal at the back post, so going 3-2 up, but almost straight away Jack Hannah broke clear and from well outside the area he coolly slotted home the equaliser, and thats the way it stayed until the end.

A very good game between 2 tough sides.

League Game vs Gillford Park 2-1 Win

A Good performance by the boys on a cold but bright afternoon at the sheepmount.

Early on we had a couple of good shots, which the Gillford goalie did really well to deal with. However there was no stopping our first goal by David Carruthers from a very tight angle, hitting it into the top of the net. After that Gillford pushed forward and scored from wide on the right with a shot over our goalies head. We then went ahead 2-1 with a great looping shot over their goalie from David.

After the break both sides had chances, but some good defending stopped there being any further score.

League Game vs Stanwix 0-0 Draw

A game that promised a lot going in, with both teams undefeated so far, Stanwix having won all their games, only conceding 1 goal so far, and our boys having scored 51 goals in 9 games.

The first half started of well for Northbank with a good shot from Jack hitting the bar, we then proceeded to hit the bar twice more in the first half, from David and Antony, we were unlucky not to go into the break leading by a couple of goals. That said Stanwix were dangerous on the break and our defence and keeper Scott, had to be on their toes to protect our goals.

The second half was a closer game, with end to end action, we had a goal mouth scramble were the ball almost went over the line, but the Stanwix goalie somehow managed to keep the ball out. Stanwix also pushed on and hit the bar themselves.

Probably the best 0-0 draw we will have this season, both goalies were picked as the respective MoM's.

News posted 17th November

League Game vs Silloth 3-1 Win

Another good win for our team, the game started well for us with a great ball from Jack H. to David splitting 2 defenders and David made no mistake in putting us 1-0 up, after that we could have had 2-3 more before half time, but for some heroics by the Silloth goalie. Silloth equalised before half time with a deflected goal that Scott could do nothing about.

Then in the second half, we took the lead with another well taken goal by David, from an extremely tight angle. Silloth played their part in what turned out to be a good game to watch, they never gave up battling, but neither did we, and we got our reward via a lobbed shot from Antony Tang making it 3-1 and thats how the game finished.

That's 6 wins and 2 draws from our 8 games so far, so the boys are playing really well, we have a tough game this weekend against Stanwix another un-beaten team, so it will be interesting to see how the boys manage.

Cup game vs Abbeytown 5-1 Win

A really good performance from the boys. David Carruthers opening the scoring for Northbank, then Max brown making it 2-0, at this point Abbeytown had a period of good pressure culminating in a goal from close range, bringing back to 2-1 at half time.

After the break, Abbeytown pushed forward with a good move, which met with some good defending, stopping them drawing level, from one such attack the ball broke to Max in his own half, who then proceeded to go past 3 players, then with a cool head he rounded the goalie to score and make it 3-1, Ben Cortes who had joined the game in the second half scored a brace of well taken goals, making it 5-1 at the final whistle, a good perfornance against a team who never gave up.

League game vs Carlisle City A 4 - 2 Win.

Another hard game for the boys, which showed their true spirit. After starting brightly with an early goal from Jack Hannah, Carlisle City hit back with a great goal from distance, then they took the lead, which they held until 10mins to go. Then Antony, who had just came back on the pitch struck a good goal to get us level. This proved tp be the lift the boys needed, with Jack hitting a good shot which the city keeper could not stop, then with minutes to go David broke through and had his first shot saved, but made no mistake with the rebound of the goalie. A good performance by both teams.

Match vs Edenvale Vultures 6-0 Win

First of all this was a good game between two competitive sides.

The first half was a close match between the teams, with some great defending from both sides, the only goal came from Jack Hannah, striking a looping shot from well outside the box, which just managed to dip under the bar.

For the second half, Northbank came out quickly and Max Brown scored the second with a great drive down into the bottom corner. Jack then got a further 2 goals making it 4-0, there was still some great defensive play and our goalie Scott was determined along with his defence not to let a goal in. After a goal mouth scramble Ben scored (his second in 2 games for us), then finally after a good ball from Scott, Anthony ran with it then passed to David, who then seeing Antony had carried on running passed the ball through to him, Antony then showed strength to get past the last defender and calmly slot the ball home, a good goal for his effort.

All in all a good game, the final score being 6-0, but this hides the fact Edenvale are an improving team.

Match vs Carlisle City 4-4 Draw

A tough match to start the season with, initially City took a quick 2-0 lead after some good football, passing the ball from defence to attack with real purpose. Northbank then got themselves back into the game with a good oppurtunist goal from Antony Tang making his debut for the team, unfortunately City scored straight from the kick-off taking it to 3-1, which is how it ended at half-time. The second half started with the Northbank boys showing more purpose about their play, and David Carruthers capped a great display on his first game also, by making it 3-2 early in the second half, but again City scored almost straight away, going to 4-2, at this point it looked like it was going to be City's game, but our team never let their heads drop, and it paid off, after David hit the post, the rebound came to Max Brown who slotted the ball home from close range. Max then levelled the score with a great strike from the right wing going straight into the net by the rear post. After that both teams could have won, Jack Hannah put in a great strike which looked like it was going into the top corner, only for the goalie to make a great diving save. The game ended 4-4, a great performance from both sides.

Match vs Northbank, a good game to end the season with.

This match ebbed and flowed both ways, with Northbank A taking a 2-0 lead, through two good strikes from Lewis and Charlie, then a little bit of brilliance from Alex Salkeld, who seeing the goalie of his line, hit a shot from well outside the area which went sailing into the top of the net, bringing it back to 2-1, the second half then saw Northbank go on from this and score 2 more, so taking the lead for the first time in the match 3-2, but then thankfully Lewis got free on the right and sidefooted a shot past the goalie, making the score 3-3. A good result for both teams and a game played with good football and good attitudes from both teams, both of whom have been a credit themselves and their club this season.

Match vs Edenvale Vultures, this was definitely a game of 2 halves, against the wind, we were caught with some good breaks out of defence by Edenvale, enabling them to go in 3-1 up at half time, a position our boys have not found themselves in this season.

However, the second half was a different story, after a change in organisation and a good team talk, we asked for a quick goal to get us back in it, and thats exactly what the team did Max Brown scoring in the first couple of minutes after a good move out from defence, this proved to be the start we needed, we pushed on from there and scored 6 goals in the second half, with a great MOM performance by Charlie Osgood in midfield.

Overall result a 7-3 win for Northbank.

Another performance showing the character of our team.

Match vs High Hesket, a good 4-2 win, in what can only be described as difficult conditions, Northbank pulled out a 4-0 lead after 2 goals for Jack Hannah, 1 for Adam Robinson and 1 for Luke Johnson who never fails to leave his mark on the matchs he is involved in. There was then a spirited comeback by High Hesket which saw them pull 2 goals back in the last 10mins.

Our team bounced back from last weeks loss, with a great 7-0 win against Carlisle City, it was a great performance by the whole team. A hatrick for both Lewis Glendinning (MOM) and Jack Hannah, with Max Brown adding another.

Only the second loss of the season today 2-1 vs Warwick Wanderers Blue who took their chances well and defended very well and bravely at times. Our goal was scored by Jack Hannah.

Northbank A under 9's won 5-1 on Saturday against Stanwix Sting

Stanwix took the lead in the first five minutes, with a great strike from outside the box, which our goalie nearly saved, but it came of his hands and into the net.

Northbank got it back to 1-1 at half time via Max Brown.

The second half saw Northbank pull away, with some great individual play on the right wing from Lewis Glendinning, providing most of the goals for his team mates and netting one for himself.

All round a good performance especially in the second half, against a side improving all the time.

Northbank A under 9's won 3-1 on Saturday against Gilford Park

It was a goaless first half, thanks to some solid goal keeping by Scott Wilson (MOM) and some good defending.

In the second half, Gilford scored first to take the lead, this was cancelled out by a good goal by Luke Johnson at the back post from a tight angle. Northbank then took the lead via a half volley from Jack Hannah, then with few minutes to go Max Brown sealed the win with a run from his own half of the pitch finishing off with a well placed goal.

A great team performance against a tough team.
